Evaristo Verde "Barich"...

One of the first boat builders of Sarteneja...
When we look back at history of boat building, it is important to know that Mr. Evaristo Verde was a pioneer in acquiring the boat building skill. Mr. Verde also known as "Barich" married Engracia Catzim and had 12 wonderful children. It is unknown if he learned the skill from Mr. Peter Young or if he learned the skill on his own but what is on record is that he built more than 17 boats during his life time. Keeping the skill going Mr. Verde taught his younger brother, Natividad Verde, another major pioneer in boat building in Belize.

Janet… Through the eyes of Elena           Eighty-seven years ago, Elena Viamil came into this world just 2 years after the Great Depression. This event resulted in economic hardship all over the world especially for a struggling family like Elena’s.  Elena was born and raised in Shipstern; where she learned Spanish, Creole, and Maya as her first and second languages. At the ag e of 14, Elena married Natividad Verde from Sarteneja, where she gave birth to three wonderful children: Florencia, Christobal and Markitos.  Stranded In Town...  Narated by Wilhemina (Minita) Young My name is Wilhemina but many know me as "Mina" or simply "Minita". I was 16 years old when I first saw the real force of nature. I was a teacher's assistant at the local primary school at that time, when nature taught me my greatest lesson. I was the oldest daughter of Miss Dominga and Mr. Peter Young and the older sister of Wilhem, Doglas, Nora, and Madeline. Madeline, my youngest sister, was sky flying with fever. My parents were concerned for Madelin's health, so my father hired Mr. Hernan Perez to transport my mother, Madelin and myself to Corozal Town despite the weather conditions.
