Los Costeños -1960’s

Originally starting life as the “La Banda de Sarteneja” in the 1950’s, “The Trials” later known as “Los Costeños” grew to become a very special band to the younger generation. The founder of this younger version was no other than Mr. Soti Cruz, a primary school teacher and son of the founder of La Banda de Sarteneja. The new music band was composed of seven group members: Mr. Mario Mora (drum set player), Mr. Raul Mora (congas player), Mr Wilibardo Cruz (guitarist) , Mr. Alpheus Edwards (Bajoist) , Mr. Simeon Cruz (guitarist), Mr. Soti Cruz (Saxofonist) , and Mr. Hilberto Perez (Vocalist). Even though the band didn’t achieve the greatness of the mother band their covers gave the flights to imagination and life for everything. Los Costeños continued the tradition of leading the festivals and celebrations in community. The music band later was disintegrated for various reasons but their memories survived. Today Mr, Soti is a retire teacher and band member of Caribbean Roots and Yes!, he still plays the saxophone..!

Janet… Through the eyes of Elena           Eighty-seven years ago, Elena Viamil came into this world just 2 years after the Great Depression. This event resulted in economic hardship all over the world especially for a struggling family like Elena’s.  Elena was born and raised in Shipstern; where she learned Spanish, Creole, and Maya as her first and second languages. At the ag e of 14, Elena married Natividad Verde from Sarteneja, where she gave birth to three wonderful children: Florencia, Christobal and Markitos. They had a wonderful life at Shipstern until tragedy came in the form of a hurricane.     Elena was only 21 years old when Hurricane Janet changed her life forever.  Stranded In Town...  Narated by Wilhemina (Minita) Young My name is Wilhemina but many know me as "Mina" or simply "Minita". I was 16 years old when I first saw the real force of nature. I was a teacher's assistant at the local primary school at that time, when nature taught me my greatest lesson. I was the oldest daughter of Miss Dominga and Mr. Peter Young and the older sister of Wilhem, Doglas, Nora, and Madeline. Madeline, my youngest sister, was sky flying with fever. My parents were concerned for Madelin's health, so my father hired Mr. Hernan Perez to transport my mother, Madelin and myself to Corozal Town despite the weather conditions. Madeline needed to see a doctor as her fever was only increasing. We knew that Janet was on its way to Belize, but Madelin's life was also in jeopardy and we needed to move quickly.
